What E-Commerce Platform Do You Plan on Using for Your Online Store? WooCommerce? Shopify? Maybe Magento?

There’s a lot of discussion about e-commerce platforms, especially with Magento, WooCommerce and Shopify. We are going to give you a little insight to all of these, and maybe this will help you choose the right platform for your online store.

So which is the best e-commerce platform for you?

There are three types of e-commerce platforms: built for people with no programming experience, some experience or lots of experience. Magento falls in the category for those with professional web development experience. Navigation and management can be very complicated with Magento if you don’t have at least intermediate level development experience.

Magento has one of the most extensive features lists in terms of e-commerce software; everything from marketing to customer segmentation is included. Therefore, the rates are high and it’s generally implemented by larger, established companies that do most of their business on the Internet. If you are not ready to spend some cash on a web person or department or you don’t have a tech person on your team, we would recommend you to skip Magento and review other two e-commerce platforms: Shopify and WooCommerce.

The biggest difference between Shopify and WooCommerce is in the setup. WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce platform on the web. It is an open source e-commerce plugin for WordPress, therefore you need a WordPress website for which you have to pay a hosting fee, install the WooCommerce plugin, and then setup your shop. WooCommerce is a free e-commerce plugin and it allows you to sell almost everything.  It is designed for small to large-sized online merchants using WordPress.

Shopify is a market leading all in one e-commerce platform. It’s the most user friendly option and lets anyone to build an online store without any technical knowledge. It is important to know that Shopify is a hosted platform which means all of your shop’s data remains on their servers.

We would encourage people with intermediate and professional web development experience to download the free Magento version and try to build a site. For non-technical individuals, we would recommend to take a closer look at the other platforms: Shopify and WooCommerce.

We hope this was helpful. Let us know if you have any questions.
